Upgraded…

Not a real exciting post, but I’ve upgraded my Vista RC1 installation to RC2. I’ll probably have to wait until I’m fully at work before I know how much better it is. So far, it works fine processing my pictures for archival and posting… which is a good thing to do on this rainy day.

Oh – and this time, I didn’t wipe the machine out, I just did the “upgrade”. It took a little longer for the OS, but I didn’t have to reinstall all of my applications – which made it MUCH faster on the whole.

64-bit Vista

I’m trying it again. Today, I unintentionally wiped out my laptop so, I’ve decided to give the 64-bit version of Vista RC1 a go. So far, so good. Not very many 64-bit printer drivers out there, though. There’s supposed to be a new release candidate coming out soon, so I’ll try out the upgrade for that when I get it.

Work-out!

So far, I have been on a consistent workout schedule for a little over a week. This means that I did a full workout 3 days last week. This includes both a cardio segment and a weight trainging segment. This week, we started out differently. In order to build a routine that I can work consistently, I have split up the segments. I will now do weights on MWF and running on TThS. This allows me to squeeze the gym time into the morning without making me get up at 5am.

Let’s hope that I can continue to be disciplined.

Installation Trials

Okay – so the install of Vista didn’t go so well the first time around. I think I did everything in the wrong order and the machine got bogged down. Now, I’m running 64-bit Vista and posting from there. I don’t have much on the workstation yet, but I’ll put things on slowly until I get what I want done right.

It takes time, but I’ll get it right.

It’s Here

The new laptop is here. I have to say that I find the wide screen aspect ratio a bit odd, but other than that, it’s really wonderful. And zippy-fast, too! Of course, they pre-installed a 32-bit version of XP [for those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s what you’re running on your computer] instead of the 64-bit that this machine is capable of. I’m in the process of downloading a copy of the right version of Vista right now. My friend John said I could borrow his DVD in the morning, but I don’t know if I could wait that long!

And, yes: I am posting this from the new laptop!

The Great Outdoors

Sometimes, I feel like I don’t even like the outside – that I prefer the cool, artificial breeze of the air conditioning system. When I lived in Houston, this was true for 9 months out of 12. However, here I sit: outside on my back porch typing/working on my computer “in” the out-of-doors. I have to say that this is my kind of weather: partly cloudy and 71 degrees. I could sit here all day. I have all I need: phone, laptop, books, water… oops. I need some more water. I guess I’ll have to venture back inside and get some.

Camping

This weekend, we spend two full days camping. I haven’t done that in about a decade… or maybe even more. All in all, it went well. Our tent, which I bought many years ago and never used, turned out to be the best we could possibly have had. It kept us dry when the nightly rains came – and yes, rain it did: both nights. Even with the rain, though, we were nice and dry. Tents are much better than when I was a child. I remember getting soaked.

So, I took some pictures and cooked and tried my hand at catching a fish once or twice and took some pictures and played guitar and took some pictures. Basically, I had a good time. I think I can do this again. Although, with better bathing facilities… no one likes to swim or shower with spiders. Lots of spiders.

Email Upgrade

I’m now trying out the new version of Exchange 2007 – it’s still in beta, but this version is much more stable than the last one I tried. All seems to work well, so this is where it will be staying for a while. I won’t take down my old Exchange server yet – not until the final version is out. Then, I will “recycle” the server for another purpose.

At least the protocols are now secured… and with a real certificate.

I’m Back

I’m back from my hop accross the pond. Training went well, but it was tiring to do that while jet-lagged. I took a few pictures and I’ll let you know when I post them.

It was really nice to get off the airplane in Newark – for at least 10 minutes. The air was cool and humid: which is exactly what one needs after getting of the airplane’s ultra-dry air supply. Immigration was a snap. Then came customs. Yuck. If any airport does it worse than Newark, I have yet to see it. It took me over an hour to get my bag, run through the customs line [actually that little part took all of 30 seconds] and then re-check the bag for home. What a pain – AND I had to leave the secured area to do it.

Once I got to my terminal, I found a President’s Club room to sit down and do some work in – which of coruse was under construction and overcrowded due to some flight delays. At least I got a chair!
