Upgraded…

Not a real exciting post, but I’ve upgraded my Vista RC1 installation to RC2. I’ll probably have to wait until I’m fully at work before I know how much better it is. So far, it works fine processing my pictures for archival and posting… which is a good thing to do on this rainy day.

Oh – and this time, I didn’t wipe the machine out, I just did the “upgrade”. It took a little longer for the OS, but I didn’t have to reinstall all of my applications – which made it MUCH faster on the whole.

64-bit Vista

I’m trying it again. Today, I unintentionally wiped out my laptop so, I’ve decided to give the 64-bit version of Vista RC1 a go. So far, so good. Not very many 64-bit printer drivers out there, though. There’s supposed to be a new release candidate coming out soon, so I’ll try out the upgrade for that when I get it.

Installation Trials

Okay – so the install of Vista didn’t go so well the first time around. I think I did everything in the wrong order and the machine got bogged down. Now, I’m running 64-bit Vista and posting from there. I don’t have much on the workstation yet, but I’ll put things on slowly until I get what I want done right.

It takes time, but I’ll get it right.

It’s Here

The new laptop is here. I have to say that I find the wide screen aspect ratio a bit odd, but other than that, it’s really wonderful. And zippy-fast, too! Of course, they pre-installed a 32-bit version of XP [for those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s what you’re running on your computer] instead of the 64-bit that this machine is capable of. I’m in the process of downloading a copy of the right version of Vista right now. My friend John said I could borrow his DVD in the morning, but I don’t know if I could wait that long!

And, yes: I am posting this from the new laptop!

Email Upgrade

I’m now trying out the new version of Exchange 2007 – it’s still in beta, but this version is much more stable than the last one I tried. All seems to work well, so this is where it will be staying for a while. I won’t take down my old Exchange server yet – not until the final version is out. Then, I will “recycle” the server for another purpose.

At least the protocols are now secured… and with a real certificate.

New Laptop

One of my work laptops died this week – so they’re going to get me a replacement. The replacement will make my current laptop my “secondary” machine. It will be a dual-core 64 bit system [Intel Core 2 Duo] with 4GB of RAM [which is unheard of in a laptop until the last couple of months] – and I’ll be trying a Dell instead of a Toshiba.

I hope my battery doesn’t explode in flames…

LAN Slowdown

My Gigabit switch has died. Why? Who knows… I certainly don’t. I’m disappointed. I came home this evening and my switch had only one light on it and no link lights on at all. I have for the moment replaced it with a 100MB switch, but I wonder if Linksys will repair/replace it for me…

[UPDATE 7/28/06]: Well, what do you know? Looks like Linksys is going to replace it for me. They say it’s got a lifetime warranty. I’m lovin’ that!

No More Vista… For Now

That’s it for my Vista running for a while. I’m gonig back to XP. Why? Well, over all, Vista is great, but there are a couple of issues that bother me for my specific needs.

  • First, there’s the fact that I cannot use the Microsoft RAW Photo Viewer to view my RAW photos. I have to use the Canon utilities and that means that no thumbs show up in the Windows Explorer.
  • Second, my laptop “loses” the monitor when I toggle to another computer on my KVM. Aparently, this is a known bug with the nVidia drivers [not a MSFT problem…]
  • And finally: [the big one] my laptop has never run hotter and the batter dies after about 15 minutes of use while unplugged. I don’t like that.

So, it’s back to the factory image for me. I like not having to install all those drivers. I will definitely go for Vista again, but the question is whether or not I wait for the RTM version due in Q4 of this year.

Oh – and I forgot: Virtual PC 2004 doesn’t work real well on Vista. I need that, too.

Fixing The Laptop… Again

Last Friday, I was prompted to download and install an update to Windows Vista Beta 2… which I foolishly did. Now, I’m rebuilding my laptop from scratch. I tried a newer build of Vista, but was unable to get the VPN to connect, so I downloaded the absolute latest build [5473 for those of you who care or know what I’m talking about] and I was able to connect to the office VPN. So, now, I’m downloading Office 2007 Beta 2 [yeah, I know: more beta software, but that at least seems relatively stable] so I can check my work email and do my job.

I’m hoping that this build will correct several of the other problems I have noticed with the Beta 2 version of Vista. Seems to work fine so far…

Technological Distractions

Since obtaining my new phone, I can’t seem to put it down. Laura has already had a few comments about that, but I keep wanting to play with it. Over all, I’m happy with it, but I still have much to get used to. I’ve enable “voice dialing” for some numbers, which I have to say is amazing. [could do this with my old phone, but I can do much more with voice on this one and I’m not limited to 10 numbers.]

It’s hard to put down a new toy, but I know I have to periodically. I love gadgets – I just can’t let them take over.
