So Far So Good

The servers both seem to be behaving since I patched and updated the web server and fixed my SMTP problems on the email server. I’m hoping that the web dificulties don’t show up any more.

As for the email server, more dificulties will likely crop up since I’m using beta software and will upgrade it periodically. I hope it won’t cause you any problems… like bounced mail or anything.

Web Server Down?

Not anymore. It’s been down all day, but after updating some services last night and patching today with the critical updates from Microsoft, the server is back now. For a while at least. I’m still not sure what caused it to flake out like it’s been doing recently other than a possible Denial of Service attack from some mean spirited person [it’s not like the site produces any financial gain or anything, so there’s no real reason to hack me…]

So, I’ll leave it up and alone for a while instead of rebuilding from scratch like I was about to do this evening.

Of course, if it does it again tonight, there will be a rebuild in the very near future.

Exchange 12

I now have the new version of Exchange up and running. I’m only having some dificulty with certificates (except for the OWA certificate) but all else seems to be working fine. OWA looks much cleaner and has more features like the Outlook client has. I quite like it. I also don’t have to refresh the page to know if I have unread mail show up in sub-folders like I had to previously.

Anyway: so far, so good even with the encryption obstacles.

More New Software

In the effort to enhance my knowledge and experience [and to have fun] I have installed the beta version of Microsoft Exchange 2007 on my new server. I’m in the process of moving my mailbox over to the new server – I hope I don’t lose messages!

I’ll let you know how it goes…

UPDATE: Well, looks as if I don’t have the server configured correctly so I can’t check my email with OWA. I guess I’ll have to learn some more about the new Exchange…

Server Fix – Update

So far, the server motherboard replacement efforts have proven successful. There have been no unusual reboots or any other odd behavior. So, it looks as if there will be no repairs needed at this time – and hopefully for quite a long time. At least I’ve moved to a redundant architecture now – except for RAM and CPU which will be redundant at some time in the future.

Now, I just have to finish organizing my pictures…

Kaboodle!

We have just discovered Kaboodle [thanks to my friend Pete]. Kaboodle is a centralized way to have one wish list encompas many online vendors. For example, many of you know that I have an Amazon wish list. But did you know I had one at B&H Photo Video as well? I bet you didn’t [not that you could afford what’s there anyway, but you get the point]. Not only would I need a new wish list for each site, some sites would be cheaper, but because they may not offer wish lists, I would have to find a way to add that item in Amazon.

Enter Kaboodle. Kaboodle is a nice way to have one place for all of your wish lists. It does other things too, but I haven’t used them. Both Laura and I have set up Kaboodle wish lists. Go check them out! [you don’t have to buy anything… this time!]

Server Fix

After thinking I had fixed my server problem by flashing the BIOS, five days later the problem happened again. So, I called for a replacement from ASUS. I have to say that they are quite helpful and I received a new board without having to take out and ship back the old one. My first attempt at installing it for some reason didn’t work and I was about to send it back. The helpful technician told me to try it again, so I put it back in the server only to find out that it DID work… I didn’t do anything different. These things just happen…

Anyway, my data server is now fully functional and the odd reboot behavior hasn’t shown up yet – I know, it’s only been a few days, but the longer it lasts without a reboot, the better my chances are that this won’t happen again.

Cherry Blossoms?

Sorry – I haven’t had time to update the “status” properly, although now, the point is moot. Peak has passed and now there are but a few days left of the white-blossomed trees. I’m not even able to go downtown to look at the tidal basin until maybe tomorrow. I hope I can get some good pictures when I go there. Luckily, my parents are here and that means I’m on vacation and will get to play “tourist” for the rest of the week.

I just gotta plug away the rest of the afternoon, and then I’ll be off.

Comment Fix

In my quest to “de-spam” my email server and sites, I had inadvertently broken my comment notification system. So, if you were one of a large handful of people who commented and waited hours or days for your comment to show up, that should not happen again. At least, not while I’m anywhere near a computer. So, for those of you who like to comment and were frustrated by a lackluster posting response, COME BACK!!!

All better now.
