I’m Back!

After a fun-filled, exciting, relaxing vacation in the island paradise of Hawaii, I’m back to work in Orange County. It’s not much, but at least I can still see the Pacific Ocean. In a couple of weeks, I might get to work in San Francisco.

It felt strange to get on a plane so soon after an eight hour flight and after only spending a day and a half at home, and even more strange to come home to Houston when it’s colder there than where I came from! I more frequently travel back to Humid Houston from some other cold, snowy place – like Minneapolis. Yes, I know it’s a run-on sentence, but I’m allowed. It’s my site and it’s not like very many people read this…

Anyway: I’ve also posted underwater pictures of the dives. We will slowly be adding the names of the fish [including their Hawaiian names] to each picture. That way, you can search and find the exact fish you might be looking for. One day, maybe I’ll retire and just be a professional photographer… That would be fun. But, as you can tell from my pictures, I may have talent but I need training, practice, experience and better equipment… It’ll take time, but I’ll do it.

Backlog

2012-01-08 23:28:49

Have you ever gotten to a point where no matter how hard you try, it doesn’t seem like you can make any progress? I feel that way sometimes with my pictures. I have so many pictures and things I need to post and configure on my site that it sometimes seems that I can never finish it.

So: in order to catch up, I have been posting my humongous backlog of pictures. I am posting some pictures and movies (yes, Gallery will do movies as well) to the wedding album. “Wedding album?” you say. Well, you can’t see it yet. I have it hidden until I put enough things in there. It is in the first album on the gallery page, but you just can’t see it. So, once I upload more pictures, I’ll open it up for everyone to look at. I just didn’t want you to think I’d forgotten about them. No, they are a large part of my backlog.

Once I got married, my free time hasn’t been quite what it was, Thank God! So, I don’t spend as much time on the computer anymore. All these pictures and movies have been sitting there waiting for me to get to them. And now that my project has slowed a little, I have some free time in the evenings to do some photo correction and posting.

One day, maybe I’ll catch up…

Gallery 1.4.1

It’s out! I have installed the new Gallery 1.4.1 software on my server and it’s up and running. It has tons of new features, only one of which I’ve enabled at present: recursive slideshow. This used to bomb out when you tried to slideshow where there were only albums and not pictures. Now, it will go all the way down into each subalbum and show you all the pictures all the way down. Kinda cool, but if you did it from the front page, it would really keep my server busy for a while. There are, after all around 3,700 pictures on here now.

There are tons of new features I will later explore, like email subscrition and notification, gallery themes, all sorts of fun things. For now, I’ll just keep it simple and do one thing at a time.

Pictures!

Well, now that I’ve been back a while, you’re probably wondering: “Where are these pictures I keep hearing about?” Well, here they are! There are not nearly so many pictures as from Dive Turkey III. And, you’ll find some dives, I was focusing on certain objects like anemones, friends, octopi, etc.

My realization is that I need a strobe to do this right. I have been reading more about digital photography and I can only go so far with the built-in flash. It causes the particulates to illuminate, as you can see in this picture of Jason… It looks like he’s exploding.

Orange County Pictures

I have also posted the pictures (after long delays) of my trips to Orange County. Laura was with me for part of this time and appears in some of the pictures.

“Wow.” you must be thinking. “Wow. He’s posted 3 times in the same day! That’s never happened before!” You are right. It hasn’t. I am feeling the pressure of missing so many posts and have some spare bandwidth while I answer technical support questions (not mind-numbing except for the boredom).

It’s not all that bad, but I really don’t want to be so far behind that I don’t get the Dive Turkey IV pictures posted (once they’re taken, of course). Speaking of: I really need a vacation.

European Tour Pictures

European Tour Part I: I now have some pictures from the European Tour Part I posted. Part I of the tour consisted of London, Windemere, Barrow in Furness, and Bracknell in England. I did work for my customer most of the time, except for the weekend, in which I proceded to get sick. However, sick as I felt, I still managed to see the countryside. Here are pictures of lakes, hills, friends, etc. which we saw while there.

European Tour Part II: European Tour Part II consisted of the Netherlands: Haarlem, Amsterdam, Edam and Zaans (where the windmills are). We visited various places in and around Amsterdam and I worked in Haarlem.
