Well, this is the first post of the new year and I hope everyone had as good a time as Laura and I did. We snuck away for this New Year’s celebration… but we didn’t go very far! We stayed at the new Hilton Americas-Houston in downtown. It is very nice! Beautiful architecture, clean rooms, nice staff… there were a few kinks, though. Some billing errors which have yet to be straightened out – yes: they didn’t charge me enough!
I’m being nice instead of my usualy finicky self: I’m pretty snotty about hotels [I recounted at least 57 Hilton-family hotels alone I’ve stayed in… ] but this one is new and the staff is not yet familiar with all the quirks of that hotel yet. So, I’m cutting them a break. The staff was wonderful about all the short comings of the hotel. The only problem we had with them was with room service on New Year’s day. We figure that there were so many people with hangovers ordering room service late in the morning, that they were at their wits end.
All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It felt strange to be ‘away’ in the town where I live, and the weather made that feeling more eerie. Fog came in on New Year’s Eve and blanketted the city. We could not even see the ground from out window. The city disappeared for us in a very real sense. But, it came back… ah, well.
